Today, we have Diane Foy and we are going to talk about publicity — when it’s time to do it and when it’s not time to do it. I see a lot of artist wasting money on publicity. Diane is an experienced publicity person for entertainment, musicians, actors and she’s experienced this as well, so she has come up with a framework to help artists know when it’s time to invest in publicity.
Diane has always loved the music industry and wanted to be a part of it but she did not know how. She eventually went to Entertainment Management School and started her company right away. She interned in a publicist and started doing publicity for her friend’s band, started getting good publicity. After that, managers hired her to do publicity for their artists. She did it for 15-16 years. Now it’s very different. Even if you had great music but you did not have good photos and a good story, it’s hard to do it in social media. Diane got frustrated and eventually discovered coaching. She had a light bulb moment thinking that she can walk an artist through about personal branding, goal setting, and figuring out what you want. She loved having a bigger impact as a coach, doing the one-on-one connection and she absolutely loves what she does now.
New avenues have to be explored on how to get PR. Apart from social media, campus radio, Spotify playlist and blogs can be explored but it also depends on what you do.
Diane recommends looking into the first four stages even before an artist does PR. Here she shares those four stages:
1.Personal Branding
This explores questions and topics to figure out what you really want such as:
- What is your 10-year vision?
- What is your 5-year vision?
- What it is that you’re chasing?
- Goal – setting
- Building up your confidence
- What are your core values?
- Evaluating your strengths, weaknesses and limiting beliefs
2.Personality, Image and Story (Part 1)
- Knowing if you’re an introvert or extrovert. This also allows the artist to understand other people.
- Diane also does personality tests and explores the big 5 personalities.
3.Personality, Image and Story (Part 2)
- Getting your bio done and having a story vault
- Helps what you post on social media and what you reveal on interviews
4.Competitive Edge
- Knowing your offerings and target audience
After that you can start doing publicity. You could hire a publicist, radio promoter or someone like Diane to coach you on how you can do it on your own. Her goal is to have agents, media and bookers start coming to the artist.
