2017 was a year of learning in my music career so I am sharing my top 5 takeaways and how you can apply them to your music career in 2018.
What are you doing differently in 2018 in your music career? Learn what you can do build an audience connection, focus on what is working, serve your audience and grow your music business without compromising your “why.”
Relationship is everything
- Interact with audience on social media
- Person to person
- Get to know fans and audience
- Cast a wide net so you can respond with people who reach out
- Ask questions and encourage engagement in email and on social media
- Schedule time in your day to respond to audience
- Algorithms change often to encourage relationship building
- People will buy your music if they feel like they have a connection with you
- “Make friends, not fans”
Double down on what is working
- Put your time and energy in what is growing
- Analyze your income and see what is working
- Let go of what isn’t serving you and do more of what is working
- Commit
- Don’t get distracted by shiny things
Keep your audience’s best interest in mind
- Everything you should do should be in line with your mission
- Aligned with people who can help my followers like Michelle Lockey and Tara B
- Survey your audience to make sure they are being served
- When performing, work with artists who you identify with (similar genre, etc)
Test before you invest
- Ask your audience if they would invest in what you are thinking of doing
- Play new songs at open mics
- Try recording your own music somewhere else before you put in a home studio
- Start small to be sure things fit with your business
- If you can’t test, ask. Ask peers in groups on social media
Don’t compromise your “why”
- Prioritize the things that made you start your music business
- Schedule time to do the things you want to do
- Your music career should serve your “why”
- Organize your schedule such that you have time to do what you want and need to do
- Make sure you are serving your core values with your music business
- Maintain the balance of work and “why”
